About Recent Entries

Well, this is pathetic. May. 7th, 2004 @ 01:32 pm

I've really not done squat with this journal.

So in the meantime, you may want to check out my real (and often-updated) blog at http://www.bladam.com.

EDITED IN OCTOBER 2009:
Okay, I still haven't done anything with this LiveJournal, so check out my blog above or -- to hear some of my music compositions and performances, check out my new adamlasnik.net site :-)

Is it an unwritten rule... Jan. 20th, 2004 @ 10:41 pm

...that LiveJournals are supposed to be written with uber-small fonts on unattractive backgrounds?  WTF is up with so many of the journals here, or do I just have lousy eyesight?  Maybe it's a ploy to prevent people over 18 from reading their journals? :D

Introducing... me. Jan. 20th, 2004 @ 08:54 pm

I just realize I never introduced myself.  How rude!

Uh, well, you can already see my interests.  I guess I'll throw in a few additional factoids:

  • I have four current Web sites and one coming up:
    - My main site, SmileZone
    - My main blog, Bladam
    - A parody site, RIAA Amnesty
    - My Web site hosting 'company,' Lindy Hop Hosting
and also a site about online music services that I plan on opening up in a few weeks, ToneView.
  • Most of the time, I'm in one of three places:  the gym (usually in classes), dancing (Lindy Hop), or in front of my computer.
  • I don't watch TV.  I know, I'm weird.
  • I've lived in Southern California, Boston, Mannheim (Germany), Evanston (home of Northwestern University), Bloomington (Indiana University), and now reside in San Francisco.
  • I love food!
  • I'm 60% extroverted, 40% introverted.  No one believes the second part.  Oh well.

Okay, I guess that's enough for now.  If you want to know more and see pics and such, you can go here :).

Living a commercial (or, "I LOVE your hair!") Jan. 20th, 2004 @ 08:08 pm

I go to the gayest hairdresser in the gayest part of town and -- as Seinfeld would say -- not that there's anything wrong with that.  I wasn't even phased when the receptionist introduced himself to me last Halloween as "Penny.  Penny Trayshun."

So why am I -- likely the only straight guy in the joint -- driving out of my neighborhood to get my hair cut at this place?

1) Bob, my stylist, is a hell of a cool guy.  Interesting, reliable, talented.
2) He does an amazing job.

How do I know about #2? Read more... )

Aaaaaagh! Jan. 20th, 2004 @ 08:06 pm
I just wrote an entire entry, clicked on RICH TEXT, and it ate my whole entry!

I had copied the title, but not the body text, so it's all lost. AAAAACK! :(

» Random LJ questions from a newbie

  • What are the main benefits of software programs that interface with LJ? Do they really make posting 'n' browsing that much simpler? I've been trying out Semagic for a bit, and it seems nice and all, but it doesn't even have the same rich-text editor that the LJ site offers. What advantages am I missing here? And what 'power software' would you recommend for geeks like me?

  • What sites are automatically pinged when I, a lowly free-account'er with LJ, make posts? Are there any ways to add sites to be pinged?

  • Why aren't there any LJ forums for posting questions like this? Or are there and I just didn't see 'em?

  • At 32 (and not an angsty teen female), am I really hugely in the minority on LJ?

  • Do others here also keep multiple blogs... especially one on LJ, and one on MT, etc...?

Er, I guess that'll do it for now :).
» Getting back in 'touch'
I had the pleasure of spending time with friends and acquaintances today... first at Lindy in the Park, then at a nice relaxed lunch, where we bantered about online dating and networking sites and one-upped each other with stories of hilariously bad-but-true experiences. Somehow we got on the topic of desserts, and before we knew it, five of us were squishing into a sporty but tiny convertible to go across town to Ghiradelli Square for some sinfully delicious and huge portions of ice cream. » Dipping my toe into LiveJournal
Well, this is an interesting place. I'm impressed that a remotely-hosted service offers so much functionality and seems to be so polished and friendly.

Now I have to figure out how I'm going to approach this service.

I already have my own main blog, and I'm quite happy with it overall.

But... hmm... given that my real name is attached to my blog, I've been feeling increasingly uncomfortable with posting personal-type entries there; I'm currently job searching, and HR folks can be, uh, a bit cranky and suspicious of those who bare even a bit of their souls in public.

So perhaps I'll gradually begin to post my more personal entries here and leave my other blog for the predominantly geeky / intellectual stuff. Or I guess I could just cross-post everything, but that seems sort of selfish or rude or both. Hmm.

Anyway, I'm already enjoying my time here exploring others' blogs, and I look forward to interacting with many of you over time

In the meantime, I just have to figure out some stuff about basic templating, link lists, and the like without spending too much of my should-be-job-searching time here.

Less boring entries to follow, I promise ;-)
